The backbone of perinatal health is thorough prenatal care, a strong support system, and healthy lifestyle changes. The District Midwives strive to make sure each visit addresses client concerns, assesses vitals, and educates on routine testing and care options as appropriate to gestational age. Believing that birth is a transformative experience for the whole family, we invite clients to bring their partners, children, parents, and siblings so all can learn more about out-of-hospital birth options and get an understanding of what care includes.
-
Midwives are experts at normal, physiologic birth and offer individualized care, longer appointment times resulting in client education and empowerment, and relationship-centered continuous care. We facilitate a space with little to no interventions for our low-risk birth clients. When it comes to postpartum, we provide additional care at the 2 week and 4-6 week mark to make sure each of our families has a supported transition. Midwives take the time to invest in you— that’s why we believe nobody cares like a midwife!

You should consider your overall health, proximity to a hospital, care arrangements for older siblings, the accessibility in your home, ideal financial investment, and pain management options including hydrotherapy, massage, and counter pressure.

Some reputable directories applicable to the area we serve include the Midwives Alliance of North America and The Virginia Board of Medicine. Great questions to ask when assessing midwives are what credentials they hold and how they handle medical emergencies that may arise during labor and delivery.
